Modular Climbing Shoe
Project Outline
To rebuild the construction of the climbing shoe while also extend the shoes lifetime for the user
Date
Spring 2025
MY Goal
Reinvent climbing shoes with a modular system that lets climbers refresh and customize their gear effortlessly; extending life comfort, and performance
The Problem!!!
Common causalities a climber can run into if they are frequently climbing.
Opportunity Space
There is an opportunity to design a bouldering shoe with a replaceable outsole, providing users with a cost-effective solution by extending the lifespan of their footwear. This innovative feature would not only help climbers save money over time but also offer Mammut a new, sustainable product option in the climbing footwear market.
A climber can go through multiple pairs of shoes in a year causing them to spend money on multiple pairs.
This concept adds modularity, letting users replace worn parts to stay climb-ready.
Product Life Cycle
This modular design concept lets users replace worn parts such as the sole, extending the shoes life. Replaced components are recycled through a take-back program to reduce weight and support sustainability.
Going to use the climbing shoes at the gym
Purchasing new climbing shoes
Be able to buy a replacement piece for the damaged rubber, and send back old rubber to be repurposed
Using shoes consistently will cause the material to wear down. Usually the rubber is the first to go
Mind Mapping
Created a simple mind map with terms that strongly represent MAMMUT’s story and brand
Design Objectives
This modular design concept lets users replace worn parts such the sole, extending the shoes life. Replaced components are recycled through a take-back program to reduce weight and support sustainability.
Maintain climbing functionality while retaining key features
Use premium materials throughout for optimal performance
Redesign climbing shoe construction to allow for modularity
Shoe Breakdown
Constructed a detail teardown of an existing climbing shoe to analyze the dimensional structure and material composition
